ENSS Hope Project

April 2018 ~ present

Max Towers is a graduate of ENSS (2020) and Nipissing University (Concurrent Education, Mathematics, 2025). Max continues his work on the Hope Project in honour of his Grandma and a very close friend who inspire him to fundraise for a cure.

Aidan Hussey is a graduate of ENSS (2020) and McMaster University (Integrated Business and Humanities, 2025). Aidan is inspired to continue his work on the Hope Project and fundraising for cancer by the loss of his Nana and nine-year-old cousin.

Nancy Wilson proudly serves as staff (ret.)/community advisor for the ENSS Hope Project. The loss of her mother to pancreatic cancer and witnessing firsthand the impact of cancer on other friends and relatives fuels her desire to improve patient outcomes through cancer research.

The ENSS Hope Project begins April 2018 as a Grade 10 Science project to explore the effects of cancer. ENSS students Aidan Hussey and Max Towers decide to focus on meaningfully engaging ENSS students in the fight against cancer through the annual ENSS Terry Fox Campaign. Their goal is simple: to raise funds to support innovative cancer research through the Terry Fox Foundation.

With the help of staff advisor Nancy Wilson, Aidan and Max take their project from a school-wide letter writing campaign and daffodil bulb sale to the next level with the creation of the community ‘ENSS Garden of Hope’. The vision is to have the Garden located prominently at the entrance of their high school to serve as a reminder of our collective fight against cancer and to inspire hope for all those affected by the various forms of this disease.

The ENSS Garden of Hope is to be filled with commemorative bricks dedicated in honour of people who have been impacted by cancer or purchased in support of cancer research. Each brick will tell a unique story. Each brick dedicated will inspire hope that cancer may one day be cured.

An ambitious fundraising/advertising campaign to build the Garden is planned and includes social media, approaching local government/businesses/organizations for support, and participating in various local events (speaking engagements, parades, Applefest, Community Trivia Night, Golf Tournament). Our hope is the community embraces the project and makes the Garden a rich extension to the tradition of fundraising for the Terry Fox Foundation at ENSS. We set an ambitious goal to fundraise and cover 100% of the construction cost through donations.
